Our strategy for adapting to evolving hiring needs
Lessons on saving time with external recruitment expertise
What’s the connection between a SaaS scaleup and pneumonia prevention?
While studying engineering, founder Gert Oussoren discovered a technique for automating water temperature observations. Realising that most companies don’t have an efficient or reliable way to comply with water safety regulations, Gert decided to create a software company that does exactly that.
What happens to water that’s not properly managed? Well, it increases the risk of a waterborne bacteria called legionella, which can cause a serious type of pneumonia. And that’s just part of what the company helps prevent.
With a team of 35 employees, LegionellaDossier specialises in water quality management and compliance in public buildings. Providing essential software solutions for monitoring water safety in various facilities, including hospitals, universities, and restaurants. Active in the Netherlands and the UK, the company is now expanding into Spain and beyond.
The challenge
No time to search internally for a QA engineer
Daan Gehrels, Head of People at LegionellaDossier, has a strong recruiting background. In fact, he used to work at Taleron (formerly RocketPeople) before LegionellaDossier. However, when he needed to hire a QA engineer, he quickly realised that he didn’t have enough time to focus on the role, in addition to other HR priorities at the time. Like at many companies, there is not always the time or capacity to run a proper outbound recruitment process in-house.
The role of a QA engineer is also a highly specific role, requiring time and effort to thoroughly understand the nuances and effectively source candidates—time that they simply didn’t have. The decision to bring on a recruitment partner was clear, and based on his experience in recruitment, Daan was confident that Taleron could deliver.
The approach
First, we took the time to really get to know each other—going over how we work, what the role needed, expectations, budget, all the important stuff. From there, we laid out a clear plan, making sure everything was transparent from day one so that LegionallaDossier knew exactly what to expect and when to expect it. Plus, with weekly check-ins already scheduled, the whole process was smooth and structured right from the start.
As the search progressed, some adjustments were made to the candidate profile based on feedback from interviews. The hiring manager, for instance, was first searching for a more senior individual with managerial experience. But after a couple of interviews, it became clear that what they really needed was someone more hands-on, with the potential to grow into a more managerial position later.
Our sourcing team quickly adapted to their evolving needs, immediately presenting more suitable candidates. This iterative process ultimately led to the identification of candidates who better matched the company's requirements, and a successful hire.
The result
The successful placement of a QA engineer not only filled a critical gap in the team but also contributed to the company's goal of enhancing software performance. The position is critical to ensuring the proper daily function of the platform.
Overall, the partnership is a great example of combining internal knowledge with external recruitment expertise to achieve hiring success. The main benefit being to free up critical time, while also having an entire team at your disposal.
Our colleague Amir said it best: “The collaboration with Daan is a nice one. He’s seen what’s cooking in the kitchen and still wants to eat here.”
